our Story

Our furniture begins as a gift from the boreal forests of Michigan. We only use wood from dead or downed trees, so ecosystems remain intact when we harvest a log. In addition, we never support deforestation to create our furniture, ensuring that our products are environmentally responsible and sustainable.

Our focus on the Environment

As a highly environmentally sustainable furniture company, we take pride in living our philosophy rather than just paying it lip service. Our process for creating one-of-a-kind pieces of art starts years before any furniture is made, with the search for unique, sustainable materials. For example, to find the finest virgin lumber, we scour forests, farms, and tree service graveyards, using only dead and downed trees to avoid supporting the deforestation of our world. In addition, we refuse to use commercially produced lumber that contributes to environmental harm.

Our commitment to sustainability continues with our materials. From start to finish, we strive to minimize our environmental impact and create beautiful and responsible furniture. We proudly offer a unique and conscious alternative to standard, mass-produced furniture.

Stories In Grain was founded by Shawn Anderson, whose radical ideals regarding design, home, living, nature and community inspired the creation of this company. His deep appreciation for nature is evident in his art, which relies on natural materials in their rawest forms. Be it a live edge piece of spalted maple or a stump weathered by wind and rain, the wood speaks to Shawn, revealing how it longs to be used and saved. Nature is the greatest architect of all, and its wisdom is apparent when we take a moment to observe and listen to the ecosystems around us. At Stories In Grain, we strive to incorporate this natural wisdom into our work, creating furniture that is not only beautiful but also in harmony with the world around us.

After college, Shawn completed a traditional craftsman apprenticeship where he learned the art of woodworking through conventional techniques. This extensive apprenticeship enabled him to acquire skills and methods no longer commonly taught, honing his woodworking and design abilities. Today, he works out of his shop on his family's farm in Albion, Michigan, applying his knowledge and experience to create exceptional pieces of furniture.
